The most common types of dental bridges used by dentists these days are -
- Traditional Dental Bridge: When the gap created due to a missing tooth in the mouth has a healthy tooth on either side, a traditional bridge is placed with the support of the adjacent teeth and dental crowns. The dental crowns get support from the abutment teeth (the adjacent side tooth on either side).
- Cantilever Dental Bridge: It is used when the gap of the missing tooth has only one natural tooth to support it. In this case, the false tooth or pontic is kept in place by a dental crown. This dental crown has the support of only one abutment tooth. It is useful for patients who do not have two abutment teeth to support the pontic.
- Maryland dental Bridge: It is a little different from the traditional bridge. Here a metal or porcelain framework is used on the two abutment teeth to keep the pontic in place.
- Implant-Supported Dental Bridges: When either or both the supporting abutment teeth are missing, dental implants are used instead of crowns and framework to keep the pontic tooth in position.
